A bit of history here. The number of tigers in India used to be in the 5 figures. Then, primarily through poaching and trophy hunting, it dropped to a few thousand, thus, the creation of the Tiger Reserve. Now, India takes tiger conservation very seriously. Although the tiger population is small in Ranthambhore, around 50 or fewer, it is tightly controlled and monitored and a few more are born every year. Because of such few numbers, sightings are unpredictable. Indeed, a group just left the morning we arrived, had been on 8 game drives over 4 days and saw no tigers. OUR tiger sighting (spoiler alert) came within two hours of our first of two game drives!
Now, Ranthambhore has many other species, today I will picture them, the tigers will be in the next post.
No, not a three headed snake, a family.
